This Fall: The Work

Whole Life Network Release

You should have been in attendance at the July 7th Board Meeting of The Whole Life Network. The Board Members were introduced to Adam Lewis and Tricia McKenzie, both of Aspen, who are facilitators for "The Work" of Byron Katie. We were treated to samples of the effectiveness of the four questions that are the heart of The Work of Byron Katie. And we were, to say the least, tremendously moved by the simplicity but also the dynamic nature of this form of personal inquiry. We are convinced that this is the type of personal, experiential self-help that many of us in our Western Slope community will find to be invaluable.

Therefore we are announcing that this November The Whole Life Network will be hosting the appearance of our new friends, Tricia McKenzie and Adam Lewis who will introduce us to The Work. In the meantime, we strongly suggest that you do yourself a great favor and purchase a copy of Loving What Is, by Byron Katie with Stephen Mitchell. After a short distance into this book you will agree with us that the process described by the author can be a life changing experience.

Following is a direct quotation from the booklet An Excerpt from Loving What Is. "Byron Kathleen Reid, a businesswoman and mother living in the high desert of Southern California, became severely depressed while in her thirties. Over a ten-year period her depression deepened, and Katie (as she is called) spent almost two years rarely able to leave her bed, obsessing over suicide. Then one morning, from the depths of despair, she experienced a life-changing realization.

“Katie saw that when she believed that something should be different than it is ("My husband should love me more,," "My children should appreciate me,") she suffered, and when she didn't believe these thought, she felt peace. She realized that what had been causing her depression was not the world around her, but the beliefs she had about the world around her. In a flash of insight, Katie saw that our attempt to find happiness was backward - instead of hopelessly trying to change the world to match our thoughts about how it "should" be, we can question these thoughts and, by meeting reality as it is, experience unimaginable freedom and joy. Katie developed a simple yet powerful method of inquiry called The Work, that helped make this transformation practical. As a result, a bed-ridden, suicidal woman became filled with love for everything life brings.

“The Work is based purely on one woman's direct experience of how suffering is created and ended. It is astonishingly simple, accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds, and requires nothing more than a pen and paper and an open mind. Katie saw right away that giving people her insights or answers was of little value - instead, she offers a process that can give people their own answers.”

You can get your own answers this Fall when Tricia McKenzie and Adam Lewis bring their skills to our community to teach us to use the four simple questions that are the foundation of The Work. Read your upcoming issues of Connections for all of the details.

IPAfricaN Program Update

By Elizabeth Roscoe

The Whole Life Network introduced an international program in March of this year, International Partnerships: Africa Network (IPAfricaN), which places local sponsors in direct contact with young African women who need assistance with secondary or vocational school fees, room and board, uniforms and supplies. In exchange the student agrees to devote some time to community service either in local environmental projects, educational projects for younger girls or in women's health care.

The first recipient of assistance is Millicent Larbi, 20, of Accra, Ghana who is being assisted by a sponsor in Paonia, Colorado. She is attending Adowso Presbyterian Vocational Training Institute near Accra and will be studying hotel management, tourism and cooking. In a letter dated July 17, 2003, Millicent writes:
“Peace and Love from Ghana. Greetings from all the family. They are most grateful.

“I have received the money you sent....Firstly, since I came to school late I am undergoing special classes. I have paid the amount (for special classes)...and for my first practicals.

“Also, I have engaged my friends in the clean up you advised. It was very successful.

…“About the school, I am having a lot of fun. Studies are very enjoyable, although demanding. I have gained a lot of respect from both teachers and students because of the clean up I organized. Once again, I am most grateful.”

For more information about IPAfricaN, interested parties may contact Elizabeth Roscoe at 249-0397.

Meditations: Soapbox of the President

By Larry Lemser

For the first dozen plus of these short essays penned under the "Meditations" title, I have resisted all impulses to tell a story that involved me personally. This month I have deviated from that pattern.

The reason behind this change in approach is that the Lemser family has just completed a project that makes a strong environmental statement. Let me explain. On the Colorado property for which we are the current caretakers, we have three structures that consume electricity, the amount of use measured by two meters.

During July, Solar Energy International of Paonia installed a 100 watt photo voltaic grid tied system to each electric meter. My son-in-law, David Nixon (an SEI Grad) and I assisted with trenching and pole installation. We enjoyed the camaraderie and great spirit of the SEI personnel and students.

Our hard work was rewarded at the end of the job as our electric meters began running backward. We were adding electric power to the grid. At the end of the year we will still be net users of electricity. But we are content to think of how much less coal will have to be burned because of our investment in the next generation.

Our family also intends to invest in the first electric/gas hybrid mini-van when it is offered by Detroit. (We insist on the extra space of a mini-van even though TV ads portray the owners of these vehicles as hopeless losers.) How about it Detroit, why is it taking so long to engineer and produce hybrid automobiles? It must be apparent to you that the world is running out of oil.

I guess we just have to be patient, and add a solar panel here, a wind generator there, and a fuel efficient car somewhere else. Maybe the changes will be fast enough.

Peaceful Contributions for the Soul

What will meditation do for me?

By Kathy Gates

It is to our advantage to be gentle in our observations, to see and cultivate the best in who we are and in those around us.

When you begin to meditate on a daily basis you become connected to yourself and all life - as little as 10 minutes daily will make a noticeable difference in your life. You'll find that some of the things that used to get you upset, you can now handle with a sense of calmness.

You will also have more confidence in yourself and others - you'll feel happy, and your relationships with others will be more harmonious.

By meditating, you can find the union with your sacred self, you can find the ability to expose what you have hidden from your life and encounter your personal experiences and memories. Explore the feelings and emotions that create the blocks of growing to know your true purpose of being. Meditation allows you to work through the blocks and better understand the full picture of your life and see it's truth.

Meditation is a form of training, so the more you do, the more progress you'll see.

Meditation takes time and practice, honesty with yourself, stillness of the busy mind, and gratitude when you hear the peaceful language of the heart. It is a place where your heart can speak, a place of sacred silence. When you listen to your heart you become more loving to yourself; you acquire the beauty of forgiveness and this frees you to let yourself flow gently. A spiritual bliss will come over you. An awakening.

Get a journal so you can keep track of thoughts and progress as you move along. This will also help with understanding the feelings that may or may not come up. What are your thoughts as you wake up in the morning? What are your thoughts during each day? By recording what's in your heart you can find the things within screaming for attention parts of your true being that you have simply ignored because you didn't take the time to understand it. Become aware of what makes you happy, angry, hurt, loved, etc.

Through meditation, you may explore your true nature; then you will know what you need to weed out of your mind garden to create a happier, healthier self. By loving yourself, you project love.

More on meditation to come ..

(Kathy Gates' "Dancing with the Wheel" program continues on Sat., Aug. 9 from 9am-1 pm and Sat. Aug. 23, 9am-1 pm. The cost is $20; bring a sack lunch. At Women's Spirit Retreat. Call Kathy at 856-7665 for directions.)

Have You Tapped Yourself Today?

By John Freedom, MC, NLP

Let's get personal. Have you washed your face today? Brushed your hair? Shaved or put on makeup? Brushed and flossed your teeth? Dressed yourself? Tapped on your feelings?

If you said, "Yes!" to all of the above, you are part of a rare minority practicing good physical and emotional hygiene. If you said "No” to the last question, you have a lot to look forward to.

'Tapping' refers to two revolutionary techniques in the fields of personal growth and psychotherapy, Thought Field Therapy (TFT) and the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT.) An innovative psychologist, Roger Callahan, PhD, developed TFT. While treating a patient with a severe phobia of water, Dr. Callahan discovered that tapping on specific sequences of points on the acupuncture meridians will rapidly relieve fears, blocks, angers, guilts, upsets, traumas, self-sabotage, addictive cravings, etc. He followed up this discovery with years of research, and created the system now known as Thought Field Therapy.

TFT is amazingly effective, but can be somewhat complex to learn and apply. Enter Gary Craig. Coming from an engineering background, Craig looked at Callahan's TFT system, and wondered if there was a way to create a simpler, easier-to-learn system. After conducting his own research, he discovered a way to do this, and developed the emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), the 'user-friendly' version of Thought Field Therapy.

Most of us take very good care of our faces, our mouths and our bodies. But how many of us take good care of our emotional body? We slather ourselves with suds, dowse ourselves with deodorants, and wash our mouths out with mouthwash, to prevent bad breath and B.O.

But we have become all too willing to accept and live with ‘stinky’ emotions, whether in others or ourselves. (You know: people with destructive anger and/or guilt, or living in abusive relationships; ‘toxic’ shame; deep-seated fears and resentments; chronic anxieties or dark depressions; the little ‘jabs’, sarcasm and ‘digs’ we put up with; etc.) And we walk around, pretending not to notice the naked Emperors all around us.

We all sweat. We all get dirty. We all get bad breath (if we don’t brush our teeth.) And so we need to wash and brush and floss every day. Every day there are mistakes, accidents and screw-ups. Every day people ‘push our buttons,’ stress happens, and we have the ‘upset du jour.’ And every day we need to do something to release that stress, resolve triggered emotions, and restore ourselves to balance and well being.

What to do with our feelings? Feelings are valuable feedback. Feelings are meant to be felt. Once felt and acknowledged, we can use them as valuable input, learn from them, and move on. For many of us, however, feelings hang on like storm clouds in Seattle, for days and weeks and months. Then we feel sticky; we get 'emotionally constipated;’ we pile up our secret storehouse of hurts, fears, angers, guilts and resentments; and sooner or later, these ‘spill over’ into our relationships, hurting the ones we love; or erupt within our bodies, as cancers and skin disorders and heart attacks and other psycho-somatic dis-eases.

How can we deal with our feelings consciously and healthily? There are many ways. These include 'talking them out' with a friend or counselor, journal keeping, directly expressing our thoughts and feelings, pounding pillows and crying, etc. These methods, although they often feel good and serve to release feelings, often do not resolve them. And this is where tapping comes in.

Tapping (EFT & TFT) does several things. It desensitizes the emotion and the sense of ‘emotional overwhelm.’ It stimulates the flow of chi in the meridians, and balances our whole subtle energetic system. It releases endorphins, our own natural feel-good chemicals, and triggers the 'relaxation response.' (Just as we have a 'fight or flight' response, which gets us all uptight and stressed out, so we also have a relaxation response, which relaxes and renews and rejuvenates us.) It releases tension and locked-up energy in the muscles and tissues. It triggers profound energetic, perceptual and cognitive shifts (as does EMDR), so we start seeing, thinking and feeling differently. It shifts our neuro-physiology, and leaves us feeling calm, relaxed, whole, peaceful. And happy.

What is EFT good for? EFT is being used to relieve fears, blocks, upsets, traumas, and any kind of stress or 'emotional baggage.' It can help relieve aches, pains, tensions, headaches, PMS, and menstrual cramps. It is being used to assist people in overcoming food (and cookie, and chocolate!) cravings and drug addictions, as well as allergies and sensitivities. On the positive side, with EFT people are achieving better grades and test (and golf and tennis) scores; improving academic, athletic and musical performance; enhancing self-confidence and self-esteem; and creating superior physical and emotional health and deep well-being. The uses to which it is being put are as varied and creative as the humans who use it.

EFT is one of the new ‘Power Therapies,’ and part of the newly developing field of Energy Psychology. Because these new therapies work directly with energy, and affect the ‘subtle energy body’, they create change on much deeper levels than does ‘talk therapy.’ I invite you to explore and experience one of the greatest breakthroughs in healing of this century.

Interested in being healthy?

By Dr. Judith Boice, ND, LAc

One of the first questions I ask a new patient is "Are you interested in being healthy?" Many look at me quizzically. "Well, of course I do. Why else would I be here?"

For most people, health is a necessary prerequisite to create what truly matters to them. Without health, they cannot bring their visions to fruition. Not everyone is interested in being healthy, however. Some simply want symptomatic relief. Others are running from diseases they fear. A few pursue health to appease a mate or parent.

Your motivation for choosing health impacts your ability to create health. Choosing health to serve your life vision fundamentally differs from avoiding illness, problem solving, or pleasing others.

If someone wants to be healthy, my next question is "And what would full health look like for you?" I can’t offer anyone a meaningful one-size-fits-all definition of health. For one of my patients, "health" means completing two iron man competitions a year. Another wants a positive outlook on life - she’s been clinically depressed for years - and enough energy to work in the garden when she gets home from work. Each of these visions has power for that individual, but not necessarily for anyone else.

I encourage patients to include enough detail so they can accurately measure when they have achieved their desired state of health. "I want to lower my blood pressure," for example, is a very fuzzy end result. "I want to have blood pressure readings of 125/80 five days a week" is a very clearly defined goal.

Our next step is to define their current state of health, focusing on the details that pertain to their picture of health. Most doctors’ visits begin here, with current symptoms, not someone’s vision of health. This method aims at eliminating symptoms, not creating health.

For those who truly desire health, I encourage them to formally choose their vision of health. Many people follow all kinds of health-promoting regimens without actually choosing to be healthy. Often they are not even sure what health means to them. Without a clear vision of health, how could they decide if they are doing enough or too much, or evaluate if their current routine is improving or undermining their health?

The process of clarifying and then choosing your vision of health helps focus your efforts. You can also more accurately evaluate the results, e.g. did your diet and exercise routine help you lose fat without sacrificing muscle? Did the dietary changes lower your total cholesterol below 200? Have the biofeedback sessions reduced or eliminated your headaches? Of course the questions you ask will depend on your particular definition of health.

The following information is intended to catalyze your own thinking about health. I hope the suggestions will assist you in achieving your life and health goals.

The Foundations of Health (excerpted)
Many people wanting to improve their health focus on vitamins, minerals, herbs, and homeopathic remedies. While these supplements can play a vital role in restoring and maintaining health, they cannot take the place of good lifestyle choices. The daily decisions you make build the foundation for health: what you eat, whether you exercise and take time to relax, and what kind of environment you live and work in.
NUTRITION
*Choose foods as close as possible to their natural state.
*Select local, seasonal produce.
*Choose organic produce whenever possible.
*Separate fruits from other foods by at least one hour.
*Eat foods that support your body.
EXERCISE
*A complete program includes aerobic, strength building, stretching, and agility exercise.
*When beginning an exercise program, always do LESS than you think you can.
*Aerobic exercise conditions the cardiovascular system and improves endurance.
*Strength-building exercise, e.g. calisthenics and light weight lifting, increases muscle mass.
*Stretching limbers muscles and lubricates joints.
*Agility exercises, such as standing on one leg or walking across a log, fine tunes balance and coordination.
*Focus on the things you love - physical activities you love count as exercise.
RELAXATION
*Take short relaxation breaks during the day.
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
*Healthy people require a healthy environment for living and working.
*Ultimately your body is the part of the earth you are most directly responsible for. Your body is your Earth.

What on Earth can we do?

By Kathy Gates, Women’s Spirit Retreat

Did you know that refrigerators use 7% of the nations electricity, the equivalent of more than 50 percent of the power generated by all US nuclear power plants. Here are some tips to help you use it more effectively.

Maintain your refrigerator and freezer at the right temperature. The refrigerator should be between 38 and 42F and the freezer between 0 and 35 f.

Ensure the door is sealed tightly. Check the gasket (rubber seal) for cracks and dried on food. One way to test the seal: Close the door on a sheet of paper and try to pull the paper out. If it slides out easily, cold air is escaping from the compartment. Adjust or replace the seal.

Manual defrost refrigerators should be defrosted regularly. A one fourth-inch frost buildup of frost strains the motor.

One last thing-don't overcrowd the items in your refrigerator. It causes the refrigerator to run more which uses more power and strains the motor. Make your refrigerator last longer.

Help our Mother Earth save energy.

Health in the Stars

Part VI-Health Problems Shown by the Moon

By Laurel Ann dePontbriand

Medical Astrology is the branch of astrology used to maintain health by identifying, through the birth chart, individual strengths and vulnerabilities. Medical Astrology also provides insights into diagnosis and prognosis, and is able to address specific individual treatments.

The pathogenic effects of signs and planets have long been used in recognizing health problems and determining medical healing remedies.

All moon positions partake of the cross-that is, all cardinal moons, ARIES, CANCER, LIBRA, CAPRICORN, can produce any of the cardinal type problems. An Aries Moon can also have Capricorn bone and joint problems for example.

The fixed moons, TAURUS, LEO, SCORPIO, and AQUARIUS can partake of other fixed sign problems. The Taurus Moon for example can also have Leo heart problems, Scorpio sex problems or Aquarius circulatory problems.

The Ascendant is considered the first breath of life, the sign that is rising at the time of birth and is considered very important in analyzing the horoscope. This sign can be different than the Sun sign but is just as influencing. The first house represents the patient's constitution, temperament and disposition. The time of birth indicates where the Ascendant is placed. Each sign has a planetary ruler and we look to the ruler, the house placement and aspects to the planetary ruler to indicate problems. We also look at the aspects to that ruling planet. If there is more than one planet in the first house, we take those influences into account.
APHORISMS
The Moon may be regarded as the giver and the taker of life; that is, the Moon acts as a medium in carrying the life forces from the Sun to the earth and man, and the Moon forces also eventually produce death.

The Moon sign associations for Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo and Virgo are given in the previous Connections Articles:

LIBRA moons bring difficulty in the kidneys, bladder and the ovaries in women. Many inflammations of the kidney can be traced to earlier strep infections of the throat (the Taurus connection to Venus) and any strep infection should be carefully watched for this reason. Sexually transmitted diseases that cause mild inflammations in the ovarian tubes and more difficult problems as well can show up, but those are usually in conjunction with a Mars affliction. Occasionally this produces so-called tubular pregnancies but there is usually a coordinating aspect from some other planet. Libra moons are sensitive to waterborne pollution and can absorb toxins or infectious agents quickly from swimming pools or hot tubs as well as skin-applied products, such as cosmetics. The skin requires cleanliness or boils and in-grown hairs can result, as well as infections of the skin. While skin infections are less common today, they still occur and can act like hives or produce open sores, as in impetigo and the like.

SCORPIO moons have a tendency to problems in the genital and/or rectal areas of both men and women. All reproductive organs are influenced by this moon. A common one is constipation or diarrhea particularly on trips or in any situation which disrupts the normal pattern of elimination. This often contributes to hemorrhoids and flatulence, which is also common, as is the irritable bowel syndrome. It is usually caused by food or tension. This is the sign of prostate problems for men, pregnancy and child delivery problems for women. Menstrual difficulties for women are common. Intercourse can also be troublesome. The so-called “tipped uterus” relates to the Scorpio moon. Gynecological problems in general should always be checked with a physician Fertility is not usually a problem with this sign but cases in which seeming difficulty in launching a pregnancy is treated with fertility drugs can boomerang mightily, producing multiple births. In the male, impotence can appear, as can the reverse, priapism.

SAGITTARIAN moons often produce growths, cysts and tumors, thanks to the link to Jupiter. This sign has particular sympathy with the liver and the urge to “party” so typical of this position can bring on cirrhosis if there is a lifetime of such overindulgence. Jaundice will show up readily if other diseases stress the body and travel infections (malaria or rarer diseases) should not be overlooked. Where the chart indicates a long life, there will be difficulties in walking or hip problems in the later years. Hormonal disturbances that cause growth problems can show up here. Exercise will often cure all kinds of health problems and the tendency to gain weight. It is the first remedy that should be tried. Sometimes the last.

CAPRICORN moons show bone, teeth and skin problems. This is another sign that often produces lactose intolerance and the subsequent lack of adequate calcium can bring on a lifetime pattern of weak bones and constant breakages. Combinations of aspects can show where the breakages occur. This is the sign that deals the most with old age and often points to joint replacement as the bones lose their cushioning and begin to rub on one another. The teeth can be lost to decay, breakage or neglect and this is one of the signs that repays neglect furiously. Light sensitivity is found here, as well as clinical depression brought on by physical causes. It also deals with nails and ingrown toenails or nail deterioration can appear, as well as nail fungus.

AQUARIAN moons are arthritis prone, as rigidity is usually a problem, and points to hardening of the arteries as well as varicose veins (particularly in the legs) and circulatory difficulties. Both Leo and Aquarius deal with circulation and both signs choose warmer climates if possible, in old age. The Aquarius moon sometimes produces a wide array of strange symptoms when the individual is under severe stress. Simple routines and a regular amount of food and sleep are vital and can often produce remarkable improvement. Hair problems come under this sign and so do all neurological diseases and strange responses, such as a tic that won’t go away. This is the sign that used to cause children to be considered “high strung.” The ADD, Ritalin generation falls under this category as well as the Indigo children, sometimes misdiagnosed as “high strung.” Aquarius rules the calves and ankles.

PISCES moons have foot problems in general. Carefully fitted shoes, frequent changes of socks to prevent excess moisture are needed. Prompt attention to complaints should be every parent’s concern for the child with a Pisces moon. A sliver in a toe can blow up into life-threatening blood poisoning. Athlete’s foot as well as gout comes here. Diet helps gout; cleanliness and dryness prevent athlete’s foot. This sign deals with the endocrine system and diabetes can cause severe foot problems as well as other difficulties. This is another sign of sensitivity to allergens and something like poison ivy can be a constant trouble if the individual is not careful. Picses rules the feet, toes and fibrin of blood.

When one attempts to list a few of the health concerns of any sign, it is with the understanding that the moon does not operate alone in the birth pattern. The sun sign can greatly modify or redirect ailments, as it shows the general vitality of the individual. The 6th house is extremely significant for all of us. Also, there is the reciprocity found between signs of the same quadruplicity.

Judgment of any chart is a blending of the various elements. The moon is only one element, though a vital and important one.

Next time, antidotes, remedies and/or suggestions for alternative holistic/herbal recommendations for the above ailments or disturbances. These won’t replace your current MD’s care but will only give suggestions for alternative self-awareness and self-improvement.

Homeopathic Help For Companion Animals

Since when did dogs discover fire?

MVC Release

Vegetarians, beware: in this article we’re going to discuss feeding uncooked meat to companion animals. It may sound revolutionary, but when it comes to feeding raw, as Kymythy Schultze says in The Ultimate Diet- Natural Nutrition for Dog and Cats: “If the bacteria content in raw meat alarms you, remember what species you are feeding it to.” Like it or not, these are carnivores, creatures that relish a nice, ripe carcass and regularly lick and consume fecal matter when grooming themselves. Over millions of years, their short, acidic digestive tracts evolved, enabling canines and felines- both wild and domestic-- to extract the necessary nutrients from raw meat and to handle bacteria (including E. coli and Salmonella) that would send us to the hospital.

Americans started feeding commercially-processed pet foods after WWII, but most of these formulas contain far more carbohydrates-- usually 65%- than our companions need or can digest efficiently, creating larger stools and stressing the kidneys. Cooking destroys digestive enzymes and beneficial bacteria, while high heat kills omega3 fatty acids and crystallizes fats, making them hard for carnivores to digest. Most readily available processed formulas also contain loads of preservatives and artificial colors.

When feeding raw, the diet usually contains several food groups: muscle meat and a smaller proportion of organ meat (too much tends to cause diarrhea); raw meaty bones, either ground or whole, the most bio-available form of calcium which also add fiber and help express anal glands; and uncooked vegetables grown both above and below the ground, chopped in a blender to simulate the pre-digested stomach contents of prey. An additional food group includes added vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids that would be found in a wild diet and help our companions withstand the stresses and environmental toxins of modern society.

We’re not saying a raw diet is for every dog or cat. Discuss its potential benefits with your veterinarian or come by our clinic and pick up more detailed information. We currently carry Oma’s Pride, a complete line of pre-prepared frozen raw diets.
