All the Petals of the Rose: The Community Connection
by Marilynn Huseby & Larry Lemser
The Inspiration
When the Whole Life Network decided to recreate the annual
Fall Symposium, we envisioned an event which would hold
special meaning and relevance for all of our community. What
kind of a program could be created to extend this gift we saw
as The Community Connection?
There are so many ways of supporting community - bringing
in new information, building community spirit, unifying
direction, and growing volunteerism - so, in creating this
program we wanted our arms fully around the timely issues of
aligning our individual strengths and personalities with our
communities needs and the changes we all dream of for this new
millennium.
With all the changes happening around the planet, we are
all aware of the shifts we personally are making in living
simpler respecting nature, and teaching an awareness of
non-violence and cooperation.
We know the world is our responsibility and our “creation.”
Now the call for community rises following the events of the
last year. We feel deeply the urgency and the realization that
only together can our roots grow deeper into the natural world
of harmony, joy , and abundance for all. Together we finally
know that our greatest achievements will grow from supportive
efforts of our own conscious community. This is the gift of a
world we could bestow to our children.
So, we say come join hands: give birth to the dreams of a
community capable of deep relationships with all aspects of
life, a community capable of wondrous transformation and
growth. This whole event requires your presents, your
Petal, to become a Rose.
The Event With a stated purpose of cultivating a
spirit of community, it is appropriate to enlist the talents
of two local inspirational leaders. Evan Hodkins is the
Director of The School of Alchemy in Paonia and Dr. Judith
Boice of Montrose is a Naturopathic physician, daily activist
and acupuncturist. These two marvelous spirited persons will
co-facilitate the activities.
Audience Participation is a term that could have
been originated to describe the proceedings of “All The Petals
Of The Rose.” When asked, how are you going to create the
experience necessary for community connection and expression,,
Judith Boice responded, “We are going to use music,
meditation, attunement exercises and story telling.” You are
invited to bring music, a favorite poem or story, drum or
musical instrument. We hope to follow the Saturday event with
an evening outdoor ceremony to deepen our connection with all
life.
Joining Judith and Evan in creating this atmosphere will be
local artists, including David Hauze and Tamara Switzer who
are much appreciated for their beautiful and soulful work on
vocals, harp, and woodwinds.
As in the past, books and tapes by the presenters will be
available. Our valued friend, Patty Painter of Food For
Thought in Ridgway, will again be on hand to assist you.
Feel free to contribute to the information table with
upcoming events and all other projects regarding ecological
efforts, GMO foods, education, healing and children.
The Best Western Red Arrow Motor Inn, 1702 E. Main in
Montrose (970-249-9641) is a co-sponsor of the event and is
designated as Guest Headquarters.
Leta Lopez, member of the Board of Directors of The Whole
Life Network, is donating her time and energy to be Registrar
of ticket sales. You can use the form on the bottom of the
previous page to order your tickets. For more information or
questions, call Leta at 970-874-3926 or letalopez@juno.com
A concerted effort has been made to keep admission prices
affordable to all of our community. Remember lunch on Saturday
is included in your ticket price. However, any individual or
family desiring scholarship tickets and willing to contribute
assistance toward the success of this venture will be
accommodated by calling early to Larry (970-240-0234) or
Marilynn (970-252-1040).
If you’ve got a dream, make a commitment to attend. Recall
the words of the Dalai Lama, “We are not looking for the
coming of another enlightened being, but the timely coming
together of a conscious community.”

Church of Religious Science To Present Silva Method
Seminar Aug 9-11
by Mavis Bennett
Beginning Friday, Aug. 9 at 7 p.m. and continuing through
Saturday and Sunday, the Center of Religious Science will
present the renowned Silva Method Seminar, conducted by noted
instructor Sylvia Hodges Smith. The Center has moved to its
new building located at 258 Howard Street in Delta, at 7th
Street.
This is not your normal run-of-the-mill seminar. It is a
dynamic meditation system that has documented more success
than any other self-development program in history. You will
learn to use the power of your mind to attract those you want
in your life, and to have the strength to leave or change
destructive relationships.
The training teaches relaxation, both physical and mental,
reducing the effects of stress, enhancing and improving health
and energy. The Silva Method offers practical formulas for
solving problems and getting more out of life. The techniques
taught in this program have been tried, tested and proven by
50 years of research and participant success.
The Silva system uses a series of structured mental
training exercises which teach how to access the Alpha brain
waves. These exercises are designed to improve memory,
concentration, and the ability to learn quickly, as well as
improving intuition and psychic abilities.
Whether one wishes to solve problems more easily, enhance
spirituality, or just think more creatively, the Silva
techniques can accomplish these goals. Seminar participants
have reported many of the following results: reduced stress
and increased relaxation; more focused concentration and
memory; elimination of lifelong bad habits; and, improved
sports performance, test scores, communications,
relationships, health, energy, and vitality.
The originator of the method, Jose Silva, began the project
in 1948 with the intention of helping children develop the
faculties of genius. Before beginning his work in the field of
human potential, Silva was awarded many patents in
electronics. His work in the electronics field gave him the
background necessary to associate and understand the effect of
brain rhythm functioning on the human psyche.
Dr. Silva studied the mind training techniques found in
eastern and western cultures and developed a system to help
people get more out of life by tapping into their mind
potential. Many of her techniques are used in modern medicine
today. Psychologists, counselors and hypnotherapists are
frequent program attendees, as are business owners and
professionals in all fields. Even religious leaders of
different faiths encourage practice of Silva Method techniques
as a way of stilling the mind and finding inner peace.
Use the power of your mind to attract those you want in
your life, and to have the strength to leave or change
destructive relationships. Each person in the class has a
private experience. While there is adequate time for sharing
ideas and questions, participants are never asked to share
personal information. However, by the end of the two-day
class, a warm and comfortable atmosphere develops.
Sylvia Hodges Smith is a certified Instructor in the Silva
Method of Stress Control. She is a noted speaker for seminars,
luncheons, and dinners and her articles have been published
internationally in newsletters, newspapers and magazines.
While a member of the Toastmasters International organization,
she held offices, chartered a new club, and received statewide
honors in public speaking. She received a Board of Directors'
Award of Excellence from Silva International at the World
Conference in August, 2001.
Fred Stancliff of Montrose, who first took the Silva Method
Training 30 years ago, says, “I have repeated the course many
times over the years and of the seven or eight instructors I
have heard, Sylvia Smith is by far the most dynamic of them
all.She is quite experienced and makes the course not only
fun, but a powerful learning experience.” Following completion
of this seminar, attendees are invited to audit future
seminars at no cost or a small seating fee.
“Creative visualization is what’s really behind the Silva
Method,” said author Richard Bach in an interview with the
magazine, Harper’s Bazaar.” Life Magazine wrote an article
about the Silva Method, stating, “Even the doubters among us
really did feel a mounting in sense of well-being, both in
class and out. Specifically, the Silva Method graduates told
me they were able to relax, lose weight, quit smoking, find
love and achieve goals that had been eluding them for years."
Unsurpassed in the speed and effectiveness with which The
Silva Method delivers tangible results, the program is offered
in over 40 countries. It has proven so successful and popular
that there is a 100 percent money-back guarantee. For details
and registration, please contact Sylvia Smith at
MySilvaConnection.com or toll-free at 1-866-897-4582. The
local contact is Fred Stancliff, 249-8556. A portion of the
proceeds from the seminar will go to the Center of Religious
Science.

Imagine If: Green Building Workshop A Major Success
Workshop Motivates Participants To Action
Press Release Telluride, CO- (June, 2002) Imagine if you
organized a big party but didn’t know if anyone would show up.
The women at Green Media Works did just that. After four
months of research and preparation, M’Lissa Story and Julie
Homan of the newly formed nonprofit organization, Green Media
Works organized and hosted the “Imagine If…” Green Building
Workshop May 29 in Telluride, CO.
With hybrid vehicles parked prominently in front,
Telluride’s historic Sheridan Opera House hummed with
approximately 20o people and almost tangible buzz. Attendees
streamed in from Denver, Boulder, Carbondale, Paonia,
Steamboat Springs, Durango, Aspen, Montrose, Ridgway and even
as far as Taos, NM and Amherst, MA. The audience was a healthy
mix of architects, builders, interior designers, contractors,
carpenters, government officials , and well-known green
building advocates, including actor Dennis Weaver and Michael
Reynolds, inventor of the Earthship.
“It was exhilarating and exciting to see this event come to
life, “ exclaims M’Lissa Story, Director of Green Media Works.
“It was so gratifying to see the exchange of energy and ideas
at the workshop. We have already seen the results with phone
calls and emails from attendees who have started to discuss
strategies and opportunities with people that they had met at
the workshop.”
The gallery room was teeming with thirteen exhibitors from
around the state showing off their wares to enthusiastic
attendees. Representing businesses included Eco-Build,
eco-friendly building supplier, Spirit Money, a firm that
provides loans for earth-friendly construction, to Wind
Powered, a new device called a wind tree that can generate
energy for your home with just 3 miles of wind. Weaver,
founder of Institute of Ecolonomics, diligently visited each
table, picking up materials and chatting with presenters. All
enjoyed the non-stop attention from the interested attendees.
The Sheridan Opera House bustled with high energy and
enthusiasm until late in the evening. “I haven’t interacted
with like-minded folks like this in several years,” says David
Conklin, an attendee from Ridgway, CO. “I made new contacts
and exchanged business information for future meetings.”
Six green-building experts shared their expertise at the
one-day workshop: David Johnston, president of What’s
Working International Green Building Consulting firm, Doug
Graybeal, Partner of Cottle, Graybeal and Yaw Architects,
Barbra Batshalom, Director of The Green Roundtable, David
Eisenberg, Director of Development Center for Appropriate
Technology, Stephen Kanipe, Chief building official for Aspen,
CO, and David Payne, formerly with Rocky Mountain Institute,
founder of Iunxi Consulting.
“I have presented and attended hundreds of green building
workshops in the 25 years of doing this, and I have never
witnessed a more diverse and stimulating group of speakers
than at this event, “ states David Johnston, president of
What’s Working and the seminar’s final speaker. An impressed
Johnston continues, “This is one of the best programs that I
have participated in.”
All six speakers focused on ideas and methods of green or
efficient building. All agreed on the interconnectedness of
all aspects of building and development, social responsibility
and accountability for the future.
“This workshop was dynamic and timely, “ says presenter
David Payne. “We weren’t preaching to the choir like we so
often do.” Payne and several other participants noted
immediate and enthusiastic interaction and networking among
seemingly disparate audience members. Clearly, the Imagine
If... Conference, an optimal blend of theoretical and
practical information, showed attendees how to break down the
barriers to sustainability and how to begin enacting
commonsense and earth-friendly building practices.
So now what? Green Media Works has compiled the
presentations from all of the speakers and will soon submit
information packets to the various government bodies, Town
Council members, Planning & Zoning committee, County
Commissioners, and building officials.
In addition, GMW plans to submit an Energy and Green
building Points Program too. Though GMW is not alone in this
quest to see local government reshape building codes, adopt
energy efficient standards, and introduce a system of
incentives for green development, the organization is
committed to its mission: Turning environmental awareness into
environmental activism.
In conclusion, “Imagine If...” confirmed the passion and
energy of the green building movement, not to mention the
eternal wisdom of Martin Luther King, Jr., who said, “There is
nothing more tragic in all this world than to know right and
not do it.”
