Whole Life Network Release

Join us at the Expo has a double meaning for all who are reading this. Certainly it is an invitation to attend the 10th Annual Whole Life and Learning Expo: A Journey into Conscious Health and Living, on Saturday March 13th at Bill Heddles Recreation Center in Delta from 10 am until 5 pm. Moreover, it is an invitation to literally join us, The Whole Life Network. The request for a donation for admission will be waived for those who wish to join our network at the Expo. Our members have the satisfaction of knowing that they are supporting a unique non-profit institution whose only reason for being is to support our community by offering events and workshops such as the Expo. Members receive a copy of our newsletter, Connections, in their mail each month. Moreover, members receive discounts to our events and discounts at participating Whole Life Network Business Members. (For a list of our distinguished Business Members, please see the back page of this paper.) Make the decision now to join us, both at the Expo and as a member of The Whole Life Network.

You never know what new friends you may meet or what stimulating conversations you may have with old friends you haven't seen in a while. Maybe you're just curious and would like to see some of the new approaches to purifying the air and water in your home. Check out Darrell Weingard of Master Touch Living Systems. You've wondered how you could adopt some different approaches for energy consumption (like the simple instructions for building a solar oven). Talk to Jeff Tobe of Solar Energy International. You might like to simply shop around. This is the perfect place to see some beautiful hand made crafts such as painted gourds, feathers, candles, and tie dyed shirts. There are unique displays of clothing and jewelry, excellent gifts for friends or yourself.

Many, many people have benefited from exploring new health care products and experiencing natural health care approaches that support health as "natural well being." This is a concept that goes beyond curing illness. It helps us gather information on balancing our physical, mental and emotional, and spiritual aspects of our lives, bringing them together and creating a happy whole healthy person. You can talk to Fred Schmidt, Ideal Health, about his new customized nutritional supplements.

One thing that you can bet on is good fellowship and great learning experiences. But that's not all; there will be constant entertainment and great food, and many, many valuable door prizes. You could win one of two aura photos being given away by Rabbi Jeff. So, you can plan to come and spend the whole day. David and Tamara Hauze of Crawford will be treating all in attendance to the beautiful sounds of their instruments and voices. We in The Whole Life Network will forever be indebted to these two beautiful souls for the services that they have unselfishly rendered in adding so much to our events. Please read the wonderful testimonial to these two artists in Art Goodtime's article in this edition. Once again this year, you are invited to feast on organic gourmet food and beverages prepared by Heidi Hotsenpiller, formerly with the Soul Garden. Last year she couldn't bake enough of those "out of this world" chocolate chip cookies.

Don't miss this heart lifting, joyous valley event. We will have a special Whole Life Network table positioned close to the entryway doors to the fair so you can find out more of what we are doing and perhaps join our growing family. SEE YOU THERE!

This fundamental coding, written in a Language of Light of number and geometry, is the Matrix. This presentation will explore aspects of the matrix and the relationship of mind, energy and form in traditions and science, seeking to understand the architecture of multi-dimensional reality and the map of the paths of return.

Therapeutic grade essential oils have been used to enhance our physical and emotional well being for thousands of years. Discussion will include the definition of essential oils and how they differ in quality, a brief history of the use and properties of essential oils, and why essential oils are considered to be the leading edge of natural and traditional healing. You will have an opportunity to sample these exquisite oils and learn several ways to assess their quality and if they are right for you. Bill and Ann owned a metaphysical gift store in Spearfish, S.D. for over seven years, are both Reiki Masters, and teach/practice Magnified Healing. Meditations: Soapbox of the President

by Kim E. Davis

I had heard from more than one person about the magical atmosphere of the Whole Life Network retreat for the Board of Directors. These creative gatherings are traditionally held in January to get the team in resonance and incite the creative juices of the participants. This year we all met at Women's Spirit Retreat, North of Cedaredge. On the night before, the Cedaredge area received an additional five inches of snow and we learned too late that we should have four wheel drive vehicles. Our hostess, Kathy Gates, found it necessary to pick us up at the bottom of her drive and shuttle us up to her Retreat Center. We all survived the snow and were greeted by the warmth of the potbellied stove. Following our business meeting we shared the bounty of a potluck lunch and finished the day with creative meditation and a drumming circle. We arrived at some significant decisions including establishing an Identification Card of Whole Life Network memberships. You will be hearing much more on this in the near future.

Your president was quite impressed with the enthusiasm and optimism of the 2004 Board members. Our newest Board member, Warren Cotts, brings a great knowledge of marketing and organizational skills to our meetings. Polly Cady has already be in touch with several personalities that may be potentially interested in bringing their skills and knowledge to our community. Our Friday Night Forum speaker series is back in session and we have some great free talent lined up to be our teachers. Our Core group reports that all preparations have been made for our 10th annual Expo (March 13th at Bill Heddles). You won't want to miss it.

I would be remiss not to recognize the contributions of our outgoing Treasurer, Julia Gillett. Julia surprised us by resigning from the Board for personal reasons at the January meeting. Julia practically put on by herself The Whole Life and Learning Expo and the Gather the Women Celebration in 2003. We thank her for her valuable participation and input as a Whole Life Network board member and officer and wish her well in all of her future endeavors.

ReConnections: A Look Back

The heritage of The Whole Life Network from the pages of Connections

1 Year Ago **"Have you decided to attend the Whole Life and Learning Expo yet? The Whole Life Network has taken this exciting new opportunity to hold their 9th annual event at BILL HEDDLES Recreation Center in Delta, because Delta means "Meeting Place".

**Heidi Comstock contemplating the "Gather The Women" Celebration: "It is a momentous time in history! Women worldwide are hearing the call. Intuitively we know it is time for Women to lead the way to a more peaceful and sustainable planet."

5 Years Ago **"The drumming workshop will be held 5:30-7 pm on Friday, March 5th. Space and drums are limited to 20 people, first come first served. The last one was near capacity, so advance reservations are recommended."

**Maggie Remington comments on Building Community: " Living in community means living in compassion and love. It means not only using our minds and our intelligence, it means dropping into our hearts with our intelligence and wisdom and acting accordingly. Mother Theresa said to just do what is in front of you with your heart".

10 Years Ago **"Presently the Board has hired a part-time director and has secured office space. All of this is being done so we can continue to grow and network. We are looking for new energy, ideas, and involvement from our ever growing membership and community."

**Joseph Logiudice expressing his long time love for the soil: "At the recent WLN retreat in Ouray on 1/22/94, a discussion arose regarding the potential for a cooperative gardening project. I stated that I would be willing to share a portion of my one acre property with anyone wishing to work together growing vegetables."

Remembering Aztlαn

A Column of Poetry, Culture & Spirit by Art Goodtimes

SPARROWS … It was a poetry love fest in Salida last month. Performance poets from all over the state and as far away as Chicago came to Bongo Billy's and the Steam Plant Theater to show that the spoken word is alive and well in the Colorado … Sister Yo was the headliner from the Windy City, doing a wild set Saturday night after disguising herself as a homeless woman and panhandling the audience in the lobby before her set … The Headless Buddhas of New Mexico, Art Compost and the Word Mechanics of Denver and TVS & Two Fingers of Fort Collins all gave great performances, and Aaron Abeyta of Antonito drew a standing ovation as much for the dazzling power of his language as his strong delivery. Alan Wartes and his son Jonathan (of Gunnison, but soon on their way to El Paso) also earned a standing ovation for their powerful dramatic anti-war poem … Of course, Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer of Placerville was a standout all weekend, participating with yours truly, Jude Janett of Salida, Mike Adams of Lafayette, Dale Harris of Albuquerque, Danny Rosen of Fruita, and Kierstan Bridger of Ouray in a multi-media production called "Creation Speaks" with a troupe of local Salida dancers and live musical accompaniment under the direction of Pamela Robinson of Fort Collins … A number of us did troubadour readings in the local cafes, numerous workshops, and their were several open readings, with standout performances by Seth of Denver, Celeste Labadie and Tara Miller of Paonia, Jim Tipton of Fruita, Lawton Harper of Salida and many others … But one of the big hits of the weekend was the performance of Telluride's Hastings Padua who read two wonderful anti-war poems and won the hearts of the Sparrows crowd … Check out the Sparrows website at www.sparrowspoetry.com

CD TWINS … David and Tamara Hauze of Crawford have given birth to two lovely spiritual CDs: A Deeper You and The Miracle Inside. They are meditations on love from lots of angles, or should I say angels? Many are David's original pieces including "Thank You, Sun", "Kuan Yin Prayer", "What About Today" and the two title songs. And Tamara has a jaunty little piece, "Joy and Zucchini." … There's a great Kate Wolf cover, "Brother Warrior", and other songs by Kathy Zavada, Lori McKenna and Red Grammer … My favorite is the most traditional piece, "The Greatest Gift". It's a Scottish melody with lyrics from the Isle of Iona, and it features David on harp. It's a hauntingly ethereal tune, like so many in the two CDs, with David and Tamara singing most beautifully. Their voices, whether solo or in duets, are really out of this world - a meditation all on their own. Of course, it was to the sounds of David's Celtic harp that our youngest, Gregorio, popped into this world for a water birth at the home of midwife Bill Dwelley outside of Colona. But whatever instruments are played, these are songs meant to take you deep into spiritual reverie. Check out their website for ordering information, www.davidandtamarahauze.com … Recommended.

CPC … The Colorado Progressive Coalition is a great group dedicated to social change in this state that brings together a diverse constituency of interest groups, minorities and social justice activists. They have organized some great state actions, and they would like to organize a chapter here … They're looking for someone to host a get-acquainted party in Montrose. They'll bring out a speaker and explain all that they do, and they'll be looking to sign up new members. I've been a member for four or five years, and am completely impressed with their work. Please call me (327-4767) if you're interested … Here's what U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. has to say about CPC: "Colorado Progressive Coalition is one of the best and most impressive coalitions I have ever seen. The power African-Americans, Latinos, and other people of color; religious and union leaders; low-income and middle class families; gays and lesbians and environmentalists; young people and other progressives --- all united through the CPC lets me know that the progressive social change is just around the corner." … Check out the web site: www.progressivecoalition.org

YUMI KIKUCHI … I got permission from this founder of the Global Peace Campaign to reprint a piece she did recently about the most amazing presidential candidate this country has ever offered … If you want to reach her directly, try yumik@fine.ocn.ne.jp

THE PEACE CANDIDATE … Just a year ago, someone emailed me a speech by Dennis Kucinich he gave on Jan 5, 2003 in Cleveland, Ohio. I had never heard his name before. He was talking about the US's role in the world, saying the US should give food not bombs. He also talked about creation of a cabinet level Department of Peace. I was very impressed as the US was poised to attack Iraq. It must have taken great courage for a US congressman to say that, I thought. So, I wrote an article about him for the first time. In that article, I ended: "Imagine if this man were the President of the United States, what kind of world is possible?" He had not yet announced his candidacy then … A few months later, I learned that Dennis Kucinich was running for US President. I thought a miracle has happened. I found his website and read all of his speeches in awe. Wow! He is an amazing human being. And he is running for US President! I thought this is unprecedented opportunity for approaching the lasting peace on earth for the first time … On May 27, I flew to California to see Dennis Kucinich as he was touring there. I left 2 babies behind with my husband, the first time I was ever away from them. My first encounter with Dennis was in Stockton. A Latino community hosted a small gathering and he was very compassionate with a lady who overcame alcoholism. He touched me so deeply that I wanted to do something to help spread his words. I am a writer, so I decided to write a book about him … I picked up the speeches I liked from his web site and translated, added my comment for each, and the manuscript was ready to be published. A major publisher in Japan told me that they would publish the book if Dennis got nominated. I told them it was too late then. Then a small company called me and told me that they would publish the book. A big surprise. On Oct. 8, 2003, Dennis's birthday, the book "Dennis Kucinich: A Peace President for America" was published in Japan, 5000 copies … Everyone I knew in the publishing business said the book was not salable, as no one knew Dennis Kucinich in Japan and he was not even nominated yet. But surprisingly, the first edition was almost sold out by the end of December. Another miracle is happening … Now I am in Iowa, with my husband and two babies (2 and 3 years) in support of Dennis Kucinich. I am a Japanese so I cannot vote, donate nor collect money for Dennis. All I can do is to speak, to play music and to dance for peace (and Dennis) … Many Americans do not know how much the US foreign policy is affecting the rest of the world. After 9-11, many Japanese do not feel our government is in Tokyo, but it is in Washington, D.C. Increasingly our government does not listen to the Japanese public but they respond quickly to the White House. Now the Japanese Self Defense Force is in Iraq. For what? It is the first time we ever sent our soldiers oversea into combating region since World War II … I sometimes feel I should have a right to vote for the U.S. presidential election, as our future is pretty much in the hands of the U.S. president: He decides who is a terrorist and who is not, and which country to bomb next, etc. He can withdraw from all the international treaties. Many countries and people in the world now feel threatened by the U.S. and can never say no to the U.S. as we are afraid what the U.S. may do if we do not go along with her … I also learned that Depleted Uranium is not an issue in the U.S. The U.S. Military has used DU in Kosovo, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq. It is a documented fact that 10.5 thousand U.S. soldiers who participated in the first Gulf War have returned home safely but later died due to strange illnesses called Gulf War Syndrome. Many nuclear experts suggest that exposure to DU and toxic chemicals are the reason for so many deaths among returning veterans. But children in Iraq are in an even worse situation. Their homeland is now irreversibly contaminated yet they have to live there forever. I do not see how anyone can live and grow in good health if the air, water, soil and food are radioactive. Yes, DU is radioactive, emitting alpha rays that have a half life of 4.5 billion years. Iraq has become uninhabitable, yet innocent men, women and children must live there … Dennis Kucinich is the only one who understands and take this issue seriously, the only one to address it in his campaign. He is the only one who has a plan to get the U.S. out of Iraq and the U.N. in. He is the only one talking about canceling NAFTA and WTO, replacing them with fair trade agreements, 20% renewable energy, medical marijuana, single payer universal health care, free education from pre kinder to college for all, 15% military budget cut … Why do Americans not agree with what this brave man is trying to do? Before you say he is not electable, why don't you do your part to support him? He IS electable if you get behind him. Don't you want a lasting peace on earth for a change? I do. I want our children to live in a safer, more sustainable and peaceful world. I recognize Dennis as not only the U.S. leader, but also the world leader for peace … I am here to spread his message of hope and peace as American media is not giving him the serious coverage other candidates are enjoying. Dennis is electable if all Americans have a chance to hear him once. I am not American, but my son, born in Hawaii, is. I want to raise him in the U.S. and I do not want to raise him in fear but in love …Fear ends and hope begin with Dennis Kucinich.

How It Started

by Bettye Hooley DVM

It is hard to believe that it has been so long since we first gathered to create the Whole Life Network. When Becky Lindsay asked me to participate in the process I wondered what I could bring to the group. While I certainly held all the principles we discussed dear, I didn't consider myself a very creative person. As we struggled through the long arduous process of defining our goals, creating a mission statement, logo and by-laws, a structure for all that was to come, it became clear that I was there just to keep us on track. (Not a very glorious task, but a necessary one when everyone started brainstorming at the same time.) It was a wonderful time, full of possibilities and heady power in the best sense. We were birthing something new and exciting, something that we hoped would help to make our world a better place.

What has become relatively accepted and almost commonplace now, was at the time daring and a little uncomfortable. We struggled with finding the balance between mainstream and "New Age," wanting to examine all the issues that called us to a holistic lifestyle without becoming the pariahs of a conservative community. We wanted to broaden horizons without slamming doors shut. Sometimes it worked well, sometimes there were those that felt we were being too conservative. And, there were businesses in town that felt we were so "occult" they wouldn't display our posters. Thanks to the boundless energy and superb organizational skills of Kelvin Kent, and the fearless determination of the board, we put on some awesome seminars. Thanks to Walt Hill's vision and great organization we offered the WLN Triathalon twice, just so we could say we were addressing the body part of body-mind-spirit. It was great fun, and well received by the athletic community.

I think the board retreats were the most incredible part of being on the board. We would gather once a year for a long weekend to share food and fellowship and to try and map out the course of the WLN for the coming year. I can't remember how many times we revised our mission statement always striving for the perfect expression of our communal vision. We learned a lot about working in community, and about consensus. Without Andrea Bartlett's stellar moderating we would have been lost.

The Whole Life Network was my first willful step into the world of holistic lifestyle. I have carried those early ideals into my personal life, and I find it has been natural for me to manifest them in my practice as well. I am thankful that Connections is still a voice for the WLN, and a forum for spreading the word about holistic health for both people and animals.

(Editor's Note: In 2004, The Whole Life Network celebrates fifteen years of service to our community. This article is the third in a series written by our founders, the original members of the Board of Directors of The Whole Life Network. We honor Bettye Hooley DVM who served for many years on the Board and Morningstar Veterinary Clinic, a steadfast Business Member of our network.)

Earl Sires Marks His 75th

Whole Life Network Release

If one is seeking an example of the benefits of living a life of service and dedication to the health of mind/body/spirit, look no further than our friend, Earl Sires. Earl, an active member of previous WLN Boards, the Chairman of the Peter Russell and Cultural Creatives Symposiums and a leader in the Center of Religious Science/Delta, was in town recently to celebrate an important birthday milestone. On a very difficult night to travel, a good number of his friends and associates turned out to honor this man who contributed so much to our community while he resided in our midst.

For those who may wonder what ever happened to Earl Sires, we offer the following snippet of his personal history. Following the successful conclusion in November 2001 of the Paul Ray/Sherry Anderson Symposium (Cultural Creatives), Earl resigned from the Whole Life Network Board, sold his home in Upper Colona and followed his passion to experience an educational opportunity in California. At the conclusion of the schooling, to be nearer to his family, Earl moved to Lake Lure, North Carolina in the heart of The Great Smokies. But, Earl was not through learning and exploring life. He made the decision to spend an entire year visiting places and acquaintances and family during 2004. So, you guessed it, he sold his home in North Carolina, bought a new vehicle, and has begun his twelve month quest to find out more about his native land and himself. We were the fortunate ones in that he was in our neighborhood at the time of his birthday. At this time, he is camping and hiking and writing in the Big Bend country of Texas.

At his birthday party, Earl shared with us a poem that he wrote about a year ago. The poem perfectly summarizes in our opinion the philosophy being lived by this distinguished and compassionate man. The poem appears below. Don't be surprised to see Earl Sires back in the Uncompahgre Valley this Summer. If you see him, we suggest that you give him a big hug and politely ask him to settle again in our community following his one year stint as a road warrior. Such an outcome would enrich us all personally and collectively.

I Ride The Wave
by Earl Sires
------------------------
I ride the wave whose utter lasting
is nothing less than creation's edge,
this now that ever moves
but never breaks along a shore.
For this is the center
where no circumference lies,
the place where all things
birth and die,
the fire erupting
spewing everywhere,
the water running,
riding on a beach that is not there.
I know myself to be
the foam,
the ephemeral lace,
the scudding atom.
How then
do I house these thoughts,
these images of tree
and rock
and flower and tiger,
these soaring ecstasies,
these plummeting agonies,
and this wheeling dizziness
of episodes in dark of night
these visions of things yet to be
never to be,
or memories of once was
or never will.

I ride the wave.
I glide upon the edge.
I ride where all appears and disappears.
Ecstasy on a rolling instant.

Homeopathic Help For Companion Animals

MVC Release by Laura Lee Yates

A Silent Killer

We take our kidneys for granted when we're young, and adopt pretty much the same attitude toward those organs in our companion animals. But kidney disease, also called renal disease, affects more than a million companion animals every year, and it's labeled "a silent killer" because it so often goes undetected until a great deal of damage is done.

Kidneys are critical to our survival, since they rid the body of wastes and excess water, with all blood filtering through these two bean-shaped organs . When healthy, the kidneys also regulate the chemical balance within the bloodstream, maintaining the proper levels of glucose (sugar) and the electrolytes sodium, potassium, and chloride (salts), as well as helping to regulate blood pressure.

When kidneys begin to fail, they are unable to perform their duties efficiently. Waste materials aren't excreted and the proper level of water and electrolytes aren't maintained within the bloodstream. The body tries to compensate. Perhaps we'll see the dog or cat spending more time at the water bowl than before. That way the animal will urinate more, flushing the waste from the body, but also flushing away needed chemicals. In some cases, we may also see increased appetite, digestive upset or vomiting, and/or dry skin. Unfortunately, by the time we can observe these outward signs, the damage is already done: at least 2/3 of the kidney tissue is already compromised.

When kidney failure becomes severe, the body is no longer able to compensate. The dog or cat can't drink enough water to flush the system, nor return enough of the necessary water and chemicals to the bloodstream. This can lead to a life-threatening condition called uremia, when toxic waste accumulates in the body and the balance of body fluids and chemicals can't be maintained. Sometimes uremia strikes rapidly, but often it develops during the passing of the years. Possible symptoms include not only increased thirst and abdominal distress but listlessness, loss of appetite and weight loss, and dehydration. When an emaciated elderly cat comes into the clinic, its appetite poor or nonexistent, we automatically consider renal disease.

Kidney problems aren't always a function of age. Genetics play a part, while a dose of antifreeze can bring on acute kidney failure. Sometimes renal disease is caused by an underlying condition, including immune disorders, dental disease, prostatitis, heartworms, tick-borne diseases, and diabetes or other metabolic disorders.

Now we have a new tool for detecting renal disease early- before extreme damage is done. A simple urine test called an E.R.D.-Screen takes only five minutes, but provides us with information that can allow a companion with early kidney changes to live a longer and happier life. We want to highly recommend this test for all animals seven years and older. If the test is positive, the veterinarian may recommend a change in diet; this can make a dramatic difference, adding years to the companion's life, primarily through a restriction in protein. Nutritional supplements (sometimes called nutraceuticals) may be added to provide further support. In more severe cases, fluid therapy to treat dehydration and drugs may be necessary. An E.R.D.-Screen can also alert us to the presence of many of the underlying conditions mentioned above.

We don't want to practice "crisis medicine." With wellness as our goal and through use of the best diagnostic tools available, we can keep your companion's kidneys on duty rather than taking early retirement

Dea's Kitchen: Spring cleaning, a fresh start

by Dea Jacobson

The roller coaster of Spring weather has begun, days lengthening and sun growing stronger. Seeds in the earth are bursting through their shells, sending roots deep down, weeks before their green shoots are visible. Slowly the valleys begin to blush that special iridescent shade of green, while the mountains linger under heavy Spring snows. On the South faces, little green plants show up, hardy and strong survivors of one of the coldest and wettest winters in recent memory. Here in the valley, I watch my neighbor begin to turn over wet earth with a spade, clearing out the old garden spot, anxious to get to planting. Greens can go in any time!

This is the best time, according to both Chinese and Ayurvedic medical traditions to cleanse and detoxify the body. As a gardener prepares the soil, so must we clear out and let go of the excesses of the heavy winter diet. To live in harmony with the seasons, we look at Spring as the time to make a new start. While some may see the first of the year as the time to go on a new dietary path, the seasons, not the calendar, will be your best guide and support you in this effort. So, if you have given up on your New Year's diet, there's still hope.

Now, if a cleanse seems a bit too extreme to take on at this time, consider going sugar free and eliminating all processed foods as a good place to start. But, if you are ready, here are some ideas. More can be found in the books that I am quoting from here.

Elson Haas, MD, author of Staying Health with the Seasons and The Detox Diet, offers the Master Cleanse as a nourishing and detoxing drink that can be taken from 3 to 10 days. It consists of 2 tablespoons of fresh squeezed lemon or lime juice, 1-2 Tablespoons 100% maple syrup (not honey!) and a healthy pinch of cayenne pepper in an 8 oz. glass of pure water. Drink many glasses of this throughout the day. A good balancing formula, the lemon cleanses the liver, cayenne clears the blood, eliminates toxins and keeps the body warm, while maple syrup provides calories and energy. Use less or more maple syrup according to your desired weight loss goal, which can be up to 2 pounds per day, if you stay active. If weight loss is not your goal, relax, meditate, do yoga, journal, read, spend time in nature. You will begin to realize how much time is spent thinking about, shopping for, and preparing meals. Enjoy the gift of time!

Daily elimination is very important during a cleanse. Carrie L'Esperance, author of The Seasonal Detox Diet, offers the laxative Buckhorn Bark tea. Use 2 Tablespoons each of red clover, milk thistle, dandelion leaf, and peppermint leaf and 3 Tablespoons of buckhorn bark. Boil 6 cups of pure water, remove from heat, add herbs and steep 30-60 minutes. Strain and keep refrigerated. It will keep for 3 days. Warm, but don't boil and drink in the morning and before bed. Also, dry brushing the skin, which is our largest organ of elimination, benefits the lymph system and stimulates the whole body.

After cleansing, try vegetable soups, spring greens and light grains such as quinoa. Next month we will continue with recipes to keep us clean and light.

Note: a "cleanse" differs from a fast in that a fast is water only. Those who have chronic health concerns should consult with a trusted health care provider before taking a fast.

Peaceful Contributions for the Soul

by Kathy Gates

Meditation quiets the mind so that you can listen to your intuition, your true inner-self. March is a time to contemplate your life. A time to see how you feel about giving away all the many gifts that life has given you. It is a time when things seem to be sleeping and yet within this dormancy of winter some of the deepest growth is occurring. One of the things that we have been given is our smile, it is free and it is ours to give away. This meditation is for learning to exercise your smile.

Breathe deeply, especially when you are a bit rushed, feel rattled or over worked. Stop time and breathe deeply, while you breathe, let your smile come to being. Begin to smile while you breathe. Then you realize how much your face and mind have loosened-while you breathe and smile. Let this smile spread through your body. Breathe and smile with your entire body. A great magic of peace is generated by your lips as you begin to smile, smile and breathing daily. Notice how much this smile helps your well-being and how much it helps others-when you are in a serene mood, after you have given away your smile. There is a power in your smile-the power of peace and inner equilibrium, having this power daily, it cost nothing! This inner tranquility is part of building confidence, it is part of your self empowerment. So go ahead and give a great smile to everyone you come in contact with.

More on meditation to come ..

Towards An Aquarian Age

by Louis Acker

Neptune in Aquarius (Part I)

Astrological events: Neptune Entered Aquarius for the first time on January 29, 1998 and retrograded back into Capricorn on August 23, 1998. Neptune re-entered Aquarius on November 28, 1998. Neptune leaves Aquarius and enters Pisces on April 5, 2011 and retrogrades back into Aquarius on August 6,2011. Neptune re-enters Pisces on February 12,2012.

Transits of the outer planets through the signs, especially Neptune and Pluto indicate long term trends that influence entire generations of people and give a particular flavor to a historic period of time. Neptune influences the emotional attitudes of mass consciousness or the collective unconscious. The influence of Neptune is subtle but extremely powerful. Neptune's influence is like the ebb and flows of the tides, which can leave ships stranded or lift them off their moorings. Neptune influences people's dreams, fantasies and aspirations on an individual and mass level. For this reason Neptune's transits through the signs colors the musical, artistic and entertainment tastes and attitudes of different generations. These influences are seen in styles of dress, slang expressions, popular social attitudes, and the ways in which a younger generation seeks to establish its identity often in rebellion against the values of the older generation. The hopes, dreams, frustrations, and fears affecting the collective unconscious of a generation define these expressions. The current transit of Neptune in Aquarius is occurring in a time when modern communications technology is making possible instantaneous global information access to people all over the world. This phenomenon is intermixing and homogenizing diverse historical and geographic lifestyles and cultures on a level that influences the masses and not just an intellectual elite. This phenomenon has never happened before on the pervasive scale that is now occurring. This can produce jealousy and envy between the "haves and have-nots" of the world, thus fueling discontent. It also helps responsible caring people see the need for greater justice and sharing. It can also pollute and distort cultural traditions, which have till very recently maintained their own purity and continuity. In the long run, however , the global exchange of information will bring about a unified world culture on a higher level, which will synthesize the best traditions and cultural contributions from every part of the world. This sharing of lifestyles helps to promote a sense of the common humanity of all people. Most major media is still controlled by centralized cartels that serve the agenda of the elite who wish to mind control the masses. The trend of modern communications technology can be to make communications media more diversified and accessible to the ordinary citizen and therefore more democratic. This is especially true of the Internet.

There is, however, great danger from subliminal manipulation of electronic media and mind control through implanted chips through which "Big Brother" can manipulate peoples mind without their having conscious awareness or control of it. Currently there is a legal and economic battle going on over control of the Internet. This is a crucial factor in determining the future of human freedom or lack of it on planet earth, as centralized control of media is the major tool of mass mind control. Genetic engineering can also be used as a major tool of enslavement, and has been so used by fallen extraterrestrial races.

What does all this have to do with Neptune in Aquarius? Simply that we are in an era of mass amalgamation and synthesis of the global collective unconscious and emotional outlook of humanity. Whatever dominates this process controls the future. Neptune in Aquarius can stimulate the humanitarian awareness of mankind, but there is also the danger that the good intentions of the masses can be manipulated and misguided by an unscrupulous power elite through centralized control of major media and technology. The accelerating psychic awakening of the human race will make mass manipulation more difficult but there is a very real danger that the unscrupulous use of genetic engineering and human computer interfacing through chip implants can abort this process. We are in a race with time to see if humanity can wake up fast enough to avoid our enslavement through technological means. This drama has occurred before in ancient human history . The human body is to our spiritual essence as an analogous relationship to a radio receiver and the electromagnetic signal broadcast from the transmitter. Just as a defective radio set can not translate into sound the transmitted radio signal so likewise a genetically defective human body can not be properly guided and informed by the soul. Genetic tampering is the most dangerous form of enslavement. Because this has happened in our very ancient past is the reason for the immense suffering of humanity and the current mess the human race is in. It could well be that planet earth is like a third world country being fought over by superpowers. In this case the superpowers are galactic extraterrestrial races and the third world country is planet earth and the human race. This contest has been fought over vast periods of time spanning hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of years. There is much evidence that the human species was genetically engineered by extraterrestrial to begin with. Next month I will expand on these thoughts.

The World Is Spiritually Hungry

by Rev. Arlyn Macdonald

In the country of West Africa, spiritually hungry people traveled long distances to sit cross-legged on a naked tiled floor to chant a healing mantra "I AM GOD, GOD I AM" which filled the space with powerful healing energy for three hours. In other countries all over the world, people are hungry for such spiritual experiences that uplift and consciously lead them back to that moment of inner peace and personal revelation of their true nature. Miracles happen when people feed themselves with the unlimited and everlasting food of the Spirit.

In a world of modern technology, we are beginning to realize that we have neglected the spiritual aspects of our lives. We have forgotten who we really are and have lost the way to find ourselves once again. With all the turmoil in the world, spiritual groups globally have noted a dramatic increase in attendance with more and more people turning towards the spiritual in their lives.

Many people attend regular weekly services organized by their churches, synagogues or mosques. Others meet in small groups with like-minded friends. Spiritual study groups are springing up all over, including A Course in Miracles, Conversations with God, and holy book studies. Some people meditate and pray by themselves. Some people participate in radio, television and Internet services.

There are many ways to feed our spiritual hunger. Chanting, singing, drumming, praying, dancing, meditating, praying and journaling are all traditional ways to find the way to Spirit. Each person strives to open that gateway to the spiritual world in their own way to reach the spiritual food of renewal and illumination. It doesn't matter if you do it in a group or by yourself.

In order to become a whole human being, it is essential the spiritual part of your life be fulfilled. The hunger for the spiritual will grow until you do something about it, even if you are so spiritually hungry you can't remember you need to be fed. Take time now to feed yourself what you really need - food of the Spirit. Attend the church or service or spiritual group of your choice. Take time to meditate and pray daily. Practice remembering who you are, a Child of the Light and act from that divine place in your heart.

(Every Tuesday evening, a non-traditional Spiritual Gathering will be held at 7 p.m. at the Center for Personal and Spiritual Growth. All faiths and beliefs are welcome. A drum circle will be held on the second Tuesday of the month and a Healing Circle on the fourth Tuesday with laying-on-of-hands. Guest speakers, meditations, prayers and spiritual teachings will also be included. Call Rev. Arlyn Macdonald at 252-0908 for more information.)

A Matter of Perspective

by Dr. Jerry Overton

Recently I took a break, made myself a cup of tea, and, along with at least half of the world, flipped on Oprah. She had as her guest an author (whose name I can't remember) of a new book about restoring family relationships. As is her custom, Oprah had her guest demonstrate his work as he engaged several family members who were at odds with one another.

One of the exercises he had them do was to name the three most important and meaningful experiences that they had had with their family. For many, this was difficult, mainly because they had chosen to focus only on the hurtful times, as if that was their only experience.

Knowing that in the midst of their pain this would be their tendency, he then invited one of the parents to take an experience that the now grown son or daughter had experienced as very painful when a child, and to tell his or her side of the story as father or mother. In essence, he had them reframe the experience so that the son or daughter could see it from the parent's perspective.

The results were often dramatic, bringing not only tears from the daughter or son, but also a new and completely different understanding to the experience. With this new information, the son or daughter could see the experience through the eyes of the parent, and know why they had acted as they did. With this new information, came a new perspective. And oftentimes, forgiveness and healing was instant.

Although it is not easy being a child, I can tell you from my own personal experience, it is no easier being a parent either. While most of us have good intentions for our children, we're still human, often dealing with our own pain and decades of baggage, and yet still trying with all our might to do the best we can. And sometimes in our zeal to love our children, we do things that they receive differently than we intended, and they get hurt by it. And then the hurt festers and can last for years.

I've often wondered just how different many relationships would be if the other could only see things through the eyes of the one whom they thought offended or hurt them. I know that there are experiences that children carry around that continue to give them grief and keep them at odds with their parent that could be changed if they were simply willing to hear the parent's side of the story.

I'm convinced that much healing could happen if only sons and daughters would be so willing to see things through the parent's eyes. To know and accept what was going on with the parent in the midst of the experience in question.

Of course, the key here is the willingness of those concerned to listen to one another. To be open to a new perspective. To be willing to turn loose of the pain and receive the healing that can come through forgiveness. The sad fact of the matter is that that is just too big an order for far too many. Instead, they continue to focus on the negative experiences and hold onto the pain, and rather than take responsibility for their healing, they persist in blaming the parent for their misery.

And then wonder why they stay at odds and healing never happens!

What on Earth can we do?

by Kathy Gates, Women's Spirit Retreat

I received this from a friend on the internet, I found it to be very interesting.

Water

This is really an eye opener:

1.  75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.
2.  In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.
3.  Even mild dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.
4.  One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.
5.  Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
6.  Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
7.  A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzz short term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or a printed page.
8.  Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79% and one is 50% less likely to develop a bladder cancer.

I think this is a message that we all need to drink a lot more water to maintain a healthier lifestyle.
