A Woman’s Wisdom Weekend
Whole Life Network Release

A Woman’s Wisdom Weekend will begin on Friday evening at the Ouray Community Center with an introduction to the benefits of thermography by Sylvia Philpy, a nurse practitioner from Colorado Springs. Sylvia is a provider of Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging, a non-invasive screening technology. DITI, or thermography, is a digital image taken with an infrared camera and produced solely from body heat. It does not involve radiation and produces no harmful side effects yet it can offer clinically significant information. Scans will be available throughout the weekend by appointment at the Wiesbaden.

For those who need to get their circulation going in the morning Bonnie Poole will offer Chi Gung exercises at 8 am on Saturday. Following registration at nine, Abigail Seaver, ND will  guide us in the effective use of homeopathics to address a variety of women’s concerns. Homeopathy is a gentle, non-toxic system of medicine which was founded in Germany over 200 years ago. New to the area, Dr. Seaver is a naturopath now practicing at Ridgway Integrative Medicine and in Montrose. Next we will hear from Pam Schofield, MA and Life Coach as she inspires us to live life with intention and on purpose. Third on Saturday mornings’ agenda is a dynamic and informative presentation on breast health from Sharon Porter, RCST, RPP, SEP. She will show us some simple exercises for self-care that energize the immune system. Sharon is a certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner trained by Peter Levine, author of Waking the Tiger. She trains practitioners in Somatic Trauma Resolution, based on Levine's work and her 30 years of experience with energy healing approaches. She offers certified training through Health Wave Institute, a state-approved school based in Pagosa Springs, where she also sees private clients.

When we reconvene after a delicious and nutritious lunch Dr. Judith Boice, author, international teacher, naturopathic physician and acupuncturist will impart wisdom regarding the Spirit of Menopause. She will help us discover lifestyle choices that can ease menopausal symptoms and improve health. Do you need hormones? What are "natural" hormones? She will discuss how hormone levels change at the time of menopause and how we can determine whether we are candidates for hormone replacement therapy. Combining sound lifestyle choices, a strong support network, and supplements (if necessary), women can move gracefully through this life transition. An Inquiry into feminine pathways to the divine, led by Julia Marie Gillett., RCST®, will follow. Julia Marie, a craniosacral therapist in Ridgway, has been immersed in ontological, mystical and spiritual study for nearly three decades. A special treat awaits us on Saturday evening when Tara Stapleton will introduce us to the sacred art of Dakini Dance. This female mystical art form comes from the Tibet / Indo Buddhist template and employs body, voice, mind and heart energy to access expanded states of enlightened awareness. A resident of Santa Fe, NM, Tara has been engaged in the meditation arts of various spiritual traditions for the past twenty years.

Sunday morning Kimah McCarty will lead a yoga workout for the “early birds” followed by Colleen Gardner who will teach us to balance our emotions and meridians through movement. Colleen, a local and international teacher, employs Educational Kinesiology, Brain Gym®, Touch for Health and her many years of clinical practice combined with intuition and a sense of humor to playfully effect positive change. We will next see how quickly and effectively trauma can be healed when Sharon Porter demonstrates Somatic Trauma Resolution through tracking body sensations. Making sense of the whole of one’s history, she builds on identified strengths and teaches how to open neural pathways, allowing trauma-bound energy to safely discharge. After the lunch break we will hear from Patricia Ammon, MD, founder of Ridgway Integrative Medicine, about “Matters of the Heart”. The number one killer of women in the US is not cancer but heart disease and Dr. Ammon will  provide us with the best possible tools available to protect ourselves from this silent but deadly disease. After her talk she will answer your questions so come prepared with your health conundrums. In case you might be feeling overwhelmed with new information at this point and wondering what you can do to manifest a world that really works, both personally and globally, Betsy McKinney, of Re-Store Our World in Telluride will help us find our authentic voices for positive change. Betsy is a mother and entrepreneur who is pioneering a new retail concept; a business that nurtures communities for the change to a just and sustainable world. This delightful, enlightening and empowering weekend of connecting with other women and sharing a woman’s special wisdom will conclude with a drumming circle and ceremony led by Vicki Senter-Lane and Kimah McCarty who each have deep roots in Native American tradition.

Ouray Colorado, with its many hot springs, is the perfect location for a weekend health education retreat. The Utes recognized the benefits of the healing waters and frequented the springs long before Europeans settled in the Uncompahgre Valley. Ouray’s Wiesbaden, with its natural hot springs vapor cave, sits directly beneath what was once Chief Ouray’s summer hunting lodge. A Free Soak Pass for the Wiesbaden springs will be given to every woman who receives a thermography scan during this weekend event. Lodging and some Wiesbaden Spa services will be offered to program participants at a significant discount. Room rates at several other Ouray motels will also be discounted for those attending a Woman’s Wisdom Weekend. This is surely an opportunity not to be missed for all those eager to take charge of their own health and well being. For information on how to register for the event or to schedule a DITI scan contact Julia Marie at 626-9758, 318-0074 or email at equanimous1@yahoo.com.

Amazing Faces: Choices of Language
by Laurel Ann Browne

Deflection and redirecting children’s behavior with “Amazing Phases” that helps to stop confrontations before the conflict is a precise word phase that can improve your outlook with an internal dialog. A child’s first identity begins with his/her name, from birth to death we hear our name. When parents use this name negatively the child identifies his name with negativity. Parents unwittingly do this all the time, without realizing the impact it has on the child. “Johnny, why are you always late, or, Jane, you look awful, what’s wrong with you”? Just by rephrasing the way you say a child’s name can make a very big difference in his/her self-esteem. As parents, you want to build self-confidence and you are the role model. Using precise word phases instills positive programming. Instead of “frustrating” use the word “interesting” instead. Take the word “can’t” out of your vocabulary and you won’t instill it in your child. How you handle a stressful situation mentally sets the example. You show responsibility by talking about it!  You include the child in the discussion and ask them how it could have been handled differently. This is self-empowerment for both of you. If you ignore the frustration, (repression) then it comes out later with you’re shouting or screaming because things seem to be building up, the example has been given. This imprint sometimes acts out in your child, but now its misbehavior. We role model our children every single day, with words. Those words, when positive or rephrased can diffuse many situations. They need structure, we give them mixed messages. I think we have to replace the old adage “Don’t do as I do, just do what I say”!

The methods, techniques and course overview for this parent, teacher support group are simple but powerful methods that can work immediately. Our New Children Support Group for Parents - Join us every 2nd Wednesday, May 11th -  to empower yourselves so you can empower your children. Our Exceptional Teen and Student Support Group is May 25th  Wed Eve and every 4th Wed of every month. For more information:

Remembering Aztlán
a column of poetry, culture & spirit by Art Goodtimes

WHITEWASH… First, my deep thanks to Dr. David Homer of Telluride, who gifted me with this most amazing book by Christopher Bryson, The Fluoride Deception (Seven Stories Press, New York, 2004). It has completely changed my mind about what I thought was a proven, safe chemical. It looks like I was sold a bill of goods. And I wasn’t the only one … Checking Alternet’s Ten Worst Corporations of 2004, one begins to accept the fact that some corporations lie to their consumers, lie to their customers, lie to their workers. And that sometimes government regulators (thanks to the revolving doors between industry and federal agencies) conspire to allow well-connected industries, crucial to modern industrial society, to hide the scientific facts … That is the case Bryson makes in his well-documented treatise (112 pages of notes and citations – more than a third of the book). American industry lied to us. Government regulators lied to us. Scientists lied to us. And for the last 60 years we’ve been operating on the flimsiest of contested facts, adding a seriously toxic substance to our water supplies (voluntarily!) and have suffered the consequences … Fluoride accumulates in the body, concentrates in the arteries, attracting calcium, and contributes directly to their hardening … We get it in processed foot, bottled water, and in the very air we breathe – with coal-fired power plants being one of the largest producers of organofluorines … But heart attacks are only one side effect … In 1992 it was Dr. Joseph Lyon of the University of Utah co-authored a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association “which found that water fluoridation was associated with an increased risk of hip fracture.” Ever since, he’s had trouble getting funding for his continued research. And yet, interestingly, the U.S. has one of the highest rates of hip fractures in the world, and is witnessing an epidemic of arthritis in 21 million Americans … Read how fluoride was a critical element, like uranium, in the production of the first atom bomb, and how its production exposed thousands of war-time industrial workers to poisoning and death … Read how fluoride is an essential ingredient of CFCs and PFCs … Read of the despicable work of Dr. Robert A. Kehoe of the Kettering Institute and Dr. Harold C. Hodge of the Forsyth Dental Center in failing to reveal studies showing widespread toxic damage from fluorides, so as to keep worker lawsuits from cutting into corporate profits for the big fluoride-polluting industries like Alcoa, Reynolds Aluminum, Dupont, Monsanto and literally hundreds of others … Read about the use of non-informed human experiments in studies regarding fluoride toxicity, particularly African-Americans … Read of the real cause of the Donora (Pennsylvania) air pollution tragedy in October of 1948 – where 20 folks were killed and hundreds injured by a smog of industrial pollutants from the nearby U.S. Steel plant … Read how the early Newburgh and Grand Rapids fluoride studies were manipulated to achieve industry’s desired results by less than honest researchers. Read how even those experiments used “pure sodium fluoride while 90% of the fluoridated public water supplies in the United State use not pharmaceutical-grade fluoride but industrial-grade silicofluoride ‘scrubbed’ from the smokestacks of the Florida phosphate industry” … This is a damning tale … The 1956 “Final Newburgh Report” noted that young women in Newburgh reached puberty at an earlier age than did girls in neighboring non-fluoridated Kingston, suggesting the kind of endocrine disruption seen in other toxic chemicals. And five years after fluoridation in Grand Rapids heart disease doubled, while Newburgh had the highest heart disease rate in the nation … As Nobel Prize winning pharmacologist Dr. Arvid Carlsson writes, “The addition of fluoride to water supplies violates modern pharmacological principles,,” and he adds, “In addition, this measure is ethically questionable and unnecessarily expensive.” … Or maybe even better, dental researcher Dr. Hardy Limeback of the University of Toronto suggests that, given the dangers of fluorosis, fluoride toothpaste should be a prescription drug … Reading The Fluoride Deception is a complete education in why some segments of our population don’t trust the government, are skeptical even of government scientists, and have conspiracies theories for almost everything … As Thomas Pynchon demonstrated so capably in Z, a good dose of paranoia is probably not only justified, but a sign of health, in modern American society.

ZIMBABWEAN DRUM & DANCE … For the past few years, Chris Berry & Rujeco Chenzira Masango have been teaching Easter weekend drum and dance workshops over in Hotchkiss at Memorial Hall, thanks to the good graces of Lea Rolfen and Michael McKenna … This year was no exception, and it was a powerful experience. Last time I danced as well as drummed, and I should have again this year. Both Chris and Rujeco are master teachers. And what they teach is the spirit of drumming and dancing, not just the techniques … Dolores LaChapelle over in Silverton at the Way of the Mountain Center talks about drumming  and dancing as two of seven ways she identifies towards a return to a healthy relationship of reciprocal human/earth bonding. They are central human activities all too often missing from the daily lives of Westerners like ourselves … And the timing is auspicious. The European Eostar was the goddess of the East. Ostara. Our ancestral tribes celebrated the first day of spring by the measurement of the Moon, although modern folks use the Sun Day closest to the moon cycle as Easter … For me, spring is the first day of my new year. Having made it though the winter. The time of deaths. I start to imagine green crops. Grape hyacinth. Exotic spuds. Morels poking through the burned soil & aspen duff.

Dea’s Kitchen: Grow your own
by Dea Jacobson

Many of us know the joy of working the soil and growing our own food. This is the time of year we gardeners plan and dream about all winter, as our winter supplies wane. Growing greens and herbs is a wonderful way to utilize small backyard spaces, so those of us who have little room can still enjoy the benefits of fresh produce. For a little motivation, here's some factoids about the bagged lettuce and greens we find at the local chain grocery. Although convenient, and better for you than poptarts, the lowdown is offered in the May issue of Ode Magazine: ..." firstly, add four pinches of insecticides. Two pinches of fungicide. Add two measures of herbicide. After picking, store in conditions that reduce oxygen from 21% to 3% and replace with a corresponding amount of carbon dioxide. This is perfect for stopping the aging process so the salad still appears fresh, but it can't stop the goodness being lost with each day that passes. Keep it in this state for anything up to a month. Then take some chlorine, 50 mg. per liter should do it, (about 20 times the strength of municipal swimming pool water), and gently rinse. Then, simply bag."

Now, if there's no possible way for you to grow your food, don't panic. Just do a little research on where to buy farm fresh food. It's tough competing with Walmart, which sells more food than any other supermarket in the country, so give them your business when possible. As Brian Halweil says in Ode, we don't pay for the social and environmental costs of our long-distance food system at the grocery checkout. About half of the 30,000 items in a typical supermarket are producedby 10 multinational companies. Remember not to put all your eggs in one basket.

So, now that you're motivated, let's get started. It doesn't take alot of room to grow greens and herbs. The benefits are many. First, playing in the soil is good for the soul. The result is organic, looks beautiful, and is good for you. Choose a sunny spot since herbs, which we'll focus on, need alot of sun to produce their essential oils. A small plot, container or box, with organic potting soil from a local greenhouse will get you started. You can pick up plants at the greenhouse, too, and save yourself the hassle of tending the seeds till they sprout. Or, Seeds of Change are available in many greenhouses and health food stores - my friend Rita Schaefer carries them at Plant It Earth on Highway 65 in Cedaredge. These are organic, heirloom seeds that have not been genetically modified. Since this is a cooking column and not a gardening one, I won't go into detail on how to grow the plants...The county extension service, local nurseries or master gardeners are good resources.

Real Money, a publication of Coop America featured herbal garden remedies in this month's newsletter. They suggest growing thyme, peppermint, echinacea (cone flower), cayenne pepper, yarrow, garlic and rosemary for a good start. Peppermint can be very invasive, so use a container for it. Here's their recipe for your own Herbal broth:

6 minced garlic cloves
1 tbsp. Olive oil
2 cups vegetable broth
1 tsp. chopped fresh cayenne pepper or 1/2 tsp. dried cayenne
1 tsp. fresh or 1/2 tsp. dried rosemary
1/2 tsp. fresh or 1/4 tsp dried thyme

Saute the garlic in the oil. Add the broth and simmer 20 minutes. Add the herbs and simmer 5 more minutes. Salt to taste and serve. Sip....slowly...ahhh! Of course, there is a caution to use herbs you grow responsibly. There is a wealth of resources on the medicinal properties of herbs - my favorite is the Yoga of Herbs, by Richard Frawley. Or consult with a local herbalist. Stay healthy and enjoy the Spring!

Dea Jacobson, RYT, is the owner of Blue Heron Yoga, and can be reached at www.blueheronyoga.com, at Box 95 in Cedaredge, or at 970 856 4905.She teaches yoga throughout Western Colorado.

Mystic Mother
by Jill Burkey

I am here in all the times
I gently rubbed your restless back or
traced your wide-eyed face at bedtime,
and all the times my mother did the same.
I am here in all the times,
heavy with the static web of sleep,
I tumbled towards your hungry cries,
your homesick body savoring my closeness.
I am here in all the times I ached for you -
the day you were two and a half and
walked the long hallway to surgery,
the first time you were teased and didn't know it,
the unreciprocated friendship you extended
to a child too old to be bothered.

I am also here in all the times
I tried to ignore your cries and questions,
put you off with , "just a minute, after I
put in the laundry, fix dinner, finish this poem,
make a phone call, I'll play hide and seek,
give you a horsey ride, push you on the swing."
I am here in all the easy times
I let you watch too much TV,
go to bed without brushing your teeth,
get away with being naughty.
I am both women,
full of capacity for limited attention
and without witchcraft for inventing time, yet
you must have a clean house, full belly,
clothes that fit, a mother who feeds her soul,
all endeavors that lead me away from your devotion
like a distracted girl following a clever cat.

I try to be the serene mother who
plays with you, gives you the right answers,
tells you the right things, goes beyond brick and mortar,
the robotic routine of our living days.

I watch my own mother with experienced eyes
and sense her listening to her mother,
her mother's mother, and hers before that
in a chorus of womanly voices braiding wisdom
through tender wombs and pomegranate hearts,
singing a song that was in our memory
before we knew what memory was or how to look for it,
with a measure that rushes to lift our lowered chins
when it is time to raise our faces
to the shining sun and remember who we are.
Each night I press my ear to the pillow and wait.

Peaceful Contributions for the Soul
by Kathy Gates

Happy May to everyone. This month’s meditation is truly awesome. When we look around us at everything that has been manifested into our lives it is remarkable. This meditation I found at a web site, really caught my mind and started to share it with everyone, so here it is.. From The Enlightened Being web-site:

Manifesting is the science of how we can easily and effortlessly materialize our desires into the physical world. Manifesting is possible by increasing the vibration within your body, with your mind, and holding the vision of what you choose to experience in your world.

Manifesting any desired outcome happens when we are truly imagining that we are experiencing what we want, while being open and receptive to the Universe. The more open and trusting we can become, the easier those things, people and experiences we want just magically materialize into our lives! The key to manifesting is staying connected to the FEELING as if your desired outcome is already here now.

This is where the experience of meditation comes in. Meditation is a quieting of the mind, where we come into a deep place of silence, inner peace and stillness inside. Meditation empowers you to hold on to your vision, while tapping into the infinite reservoir of fuel behind the manifesting machine that you already are.

When we bridge the gap between these two experiences of Manifesting and Meditation, we create a vehicle that will skyrocket you towards your desired outcome!

The Manifesting Meditation below will help you manifest your life dreams and desires faster and easier. Feel free to do this manifesting meditation as many times as you wish, and share it with whomever you please. It’s possible for everyone to start living a more empowering life that they Love!

Before you begin the Manifesting Meditation, decide on what you want to manifest. Take some time to think about this and decide on one thing that you are willing to do this meditation of for at least 3 days. Now it depends on how high your vibration already is, how big are your emotional and mental blocks to receiving and experiencing your desire, and the magnitude that you feel your desire holds for you in your future. Once you decide on what you want, start to SEE and FEEL your doing this one thing. Now, get ready to experience The Manifesting Meditation!

The Manifesting Meditation

Sitting comfortably on the floor, with your back against a wall and start to relax your body, “relax” and command every muscle, bone and cell in your entire body to totally let go and relax. Allow the mind to quiet and the body to soften. Relax EVERY muscle and cell in your body to the point of becoming very silent and still.

When the body is totally relaxed, you will feel somewhat spacious, or a feeling of timelessness.  Then imagine at the base of your spine a golden river flowing with powerful energy that is gently rising up like from the center of the earth into your body. This is a warm flowing healing energy that is connected to an infinite Source of abundance, love and goodness.

Allow it to move slowly up into the base of the spine and let it collect there for 5-10 minutes. Use your breath to pull up more energy if you want to, until it fills the base of your body. Now this golden energy is very powerful. It is the manifesting energy!

Allow it to move up in an 6-8 inch diameter column of light into your solar plexus and stomach.  When it feels like your body is tingling, warm or very “alive” focus on it rising up into the belly, heart, throat and brain. Just by focusing on these parts of your body, the golden energy will flow there.  Now, allow this river to come up and fill every cell In your body with Golden Healing Energy and Light!

Your breath is the “pump” for your golden manifesting energy. Gently, yes very gently, use each inhale to SLOWLY pull the energy up the spine and on the exhale let the energy move through and out your hands, eyes, and mouth.

Your hands, eyes, and mouth are your manifesting “projectors” (like movie projectors) that channel the Golden energy/light  to form into the images that you want to manifest. See and feel your desired outcomes being created on a big screen in front of you. Stay in this powerful projection state about 10-15 minutes, replaying the scenes you love and putting the movie on “still pause” in the scenes your truly love. When you are finished with your manifesting meditation, just relax and enjoy the rest of your day or evening.

For more information about this manifesting meditation you can go to http://www.enlightenedbeings.com/manifesting-meditation.html

Understanding Allergies
© Anne Calzada Herbalist

An allergy is defined by a reaction in the body produced by the immune system to a substance that is not normally harmful to oneself, unless of course you are allergic to it. An allergen is a substance that is viewed by the body as a foreign presence. The immune system therefore responds with an army of white blood cells and other inflammatory responses such as luekotrines and histamine that create symptoms such as congestion, runny nose, sneezing, itchy watery eyes, itchy throat, hives, rashes and even asthma. Sometimes asthma can be life threatening, sending the individual to the E.R.

There are different types of allergies classified as food, pollen, mold, pet, seasonal, chemical and others. Hay fever or allergenic rhinitis - an inflammation of the nasal passages caused by an irritant is the most common allergy.

Determining which substance you are allergic to requires some comprehensive observance and patience. Ask for an allergy test from your physician, there are several that may be done including an Ige allergy antibody test.Standard allergy treatment includes drugs that are similar to cold medications. Antihistamines are the recommended course of action, albeit some cause drowsiness and are merely suppressive of physical symptoms and some of these drugs are steroidal in composition and are not the best substance to ingest.

Food allergies can be tracked by eliminating different common food allergens such as dairy, wheat, corn, peanut, shellfish, soy, yeast, citrus and others that may be of suspect. Keep a food diary and omit the item for 2-4 weeks and reintroduce one at a time. One new food item per day and journal your reaction to this food may offer insight.

Other reasons that allergic reactions may occur are due to chemicals, metals and even parasite infestation. The liver, gallbladder, lymph and colon play an important part in the way toxins are processed and transported. Focusing energy into cleansing and rebuilding the pathway of these organs is essential.

Medicinal plants, supplements and food are very helpful in balancing a hyper-sensitive immune system. Nettle (Urtica diocia) is anti-histamine in effect due to its almost homeopathic dosage of histamine. This plant supports the adrenal glands, which produce cortisol (a strong anti-inflammatory), which helps control the level of inflammatory action in the body. Adrenal fatigue can contribute to the reaction of allergens.

Eyebright (Euphrasia sp.)is anti-inflammatory and astringent; it is soothing for the eyes, decreasing inflamed, and itchy watery eyes. It soothes nasal passages and helps to calm runny noses via its vaso constricting properties. Other plants such as yerba santa, turmeric, feverfew, onion, horseradish, elder and others are found in great combination formulas.

Homeopathics such as Allium cepa, Nux vomica, Euphrasia, Solidago, Pulsatilla , Histamanium and so many more singles and blends are available at your favorite health food store.

Support digestion with pro-biotics, enzymes and sufficient fiber. Enzymes help increase the stomach's secretion for proper digestion, important for digestion. Use hydrochloric acid enzymes, protease, papain or bromelin for protein digestion.

Undigested material particularly protein may release histamine in the colon.

Cleansing the colon of debris and parasites is beneficial. Candida can cause allergic reactions.

Nutritional support of Vitamin A and E help reduce tissue oxidation with their antioxidant support and prevent infection and soothe mucous membranes. Vitamin C especially with bio-flavinoids is anti-inflammatory in effect, reducing histamines. B-Complex especially folic acid, B6 and B12 lessen inflammatory response. B vitamins feed the adrenal glands. Zinc supports balanced immune functioning.

Supplement with quercetin or eat it in onions, garlic, horseradish, grapefruit, algae and red wine. Quercetin is a bio-flavinoid, these are also found in oranges, lemons, grapefruits, cherries, grapes, green tea and rosehips.

Try supplementing with MSM known for joint discomfort but also used for many disorders. MSM has been shown to reduce mucous membrane inflammation.

Supplement with essential fatty acids known for their anti-inflammatory effects.

Even consciously drinking more water may be of help.

For acute allergies and asthma try a bit of acupressure. Rub the web between your thumb and forefinger toward the bone for two minutes. Try to relax and reduce stress as much as possible. Metaphysically speaking who and what are you allergic to? Balance and reclaim your power as you stop and smell the roses!

ReConnections: A Look Back
The heritage of The Whole Life Network from the pages of Connections.

One Year Ago** ”The status of Honorary Lifetime Membership (in the Whole Life Network) has been established and the first ever to be singled out for this recognition are David Hauze and Tamara Switzer.”

**Lane Mills in his book review , “Dreaming Kevin (by Carla Blowey) is a book which changes lives with healing words”.

Five Years Ago** ”A group of people from the Montrose/Ridgway/Ouray general area are getting together to form a branch of the Universalist Unitarian church”  Sally Dubats

** Karl Kerr counseled us on “play”: “Playing is not something we do; it is an attitude that we create at anytime, in any place, that transforms the mundane into the divine, the boring into the joyful, the required into the desired”.

Ten Years Ago** ”The Whole Life Network, largely as a result of some wonderful group planning accomplished at the 1995 Retreat, has recently been launching some new and innovative programs and activities.”  Christine Knight

**Edith Gallenbeck, Ph.D. had this suggestion on time management: “I would like to suggest simplification and anti-planning to gain quality of life versus quantity in life”.

Coaching—It's Not Just for Athletes Anymore!
by Dr. Jerry Overton

Up until recently when you heard the word "coach" you probably thought of athletic coaches, those brave and fearless souls who led your favorite teams to victory. Names like Vince Lombardi, Tom Landry, Phil Jackson, Mike Ditka, or Mike Shanahan may have come to mind. Maybe you remembered your own favorite high school coaches who taught and nurtured you in the game, or perhaps those Moms and Dads who volunteered to coach the soccer or little league teams on which you or your children played.

Today, however, those on the cutting edge know that coaching is not just for athletes anymore. Enter the new breed of coaches, those who coach individuals and corporate groups in a variety of areas to have both personal happiness and professional success.

Personal and professional coaching is a relatively new profession which has synthesized the best from business, philosophy, psychology, spirituality, and the various personal and professional growth disciplines to benefit those who are open and willing to make dramatic positive changes in all aspects of their lives. It involves a collaborative partnership between the coach and the client to help the client achieve more success and happiness than perhaps they would on your own.

Coaches believe that clients have within themselves the right answers for every concern and situation, and see it as their job to help their clients discover and act on those answers to achieve the success and happiness they deserve and desire.

Coaches often specialize in particular areas to best meet the needs of their clients. Some coaches specialize in coaching those in sales to reach their sales potential while maintaining personal balance. Some coaches work with professionals, including physicians, dentists, attorneys, and accountants, to have both a full and a fulfilling practice, or with business owners to increase the profitability of the business. Some work with entrepreneurs who want to start up and run a successful business, and yet still have time and energy to enjoy a meaningful family life.

Some coaches work with individuals to discover their unique purpose in life and live the life they love. Some specialize in working with creatives, like artists, writers, and designers, to develop their creative talents and market them successfully. Still others help their clients integrate a healthy spirituality into their daily lives so that both their personal and professional lives are lived from that spiritual perspective.

The common thread that all personal and professional coaches share is that they help their clients make an accurate assessment of where they are now in their life, decide where they want to be, and then help them get there as quickly as possible. Accurate assessment and necessary action are the two keys to helping a client have the life they want, both personally and professionally.

Imagine if the Denver Broncos decided to save some money and get rid of their coaches. Or what if they thought that with all the talented individuals on the team, they just didn't need their coaches anymore. How long do you think they would be successful?

And think of the individual potential of each player that would be lost because it never got discovered, cultivated, nurtured, and attained because there was no coach there to coach the individual to reach his or her potential. And consider the loss to society if that potential was never discovered, developed, and shared.

Perhaps you have heard the story of Michael Jordan, who was, in my opinion, the undisputed best basketball player who has ever lived. In his sophomore year in high school he didn't even make the basketball team, much less the starting line up. However, the team's coach took a personal interest in him, saw the potential, worked with him after school, and the rest is history.

What a loss to the sport of basketball, not to mention to Michael Jordan personally, if there had been no coach there to help.Or if Michael had chosen not to avail himself of the coach's desire to help him reach his potential.

The very idea of any sports team, even those for our youngsters, not having a coach is preposterous to us. We know that they could not possibly be successful. We would laugh at the idea.

And yet, most all of us have never even considered the need for a coach to coach us to reach our potential in our personal or professional lives. We just try to do it on our own—and often that's rather hit or miss.

No wonder so many never reach their full potential—choosing instead to live their lives in a sort of low grade depression, staying stuck in a job they don't like or doesn't excite them anymore, or a place that doesn't challenge them, or in a relationship that is destroying their soul, or in a thousand other situations that don't help them reach their potential.

Just as coaching is vital to the success of athletes, it is proving to be the same for both individuals and businesses. Thousands of people around the world are now hiring coaches to coach them, both personally and professionally, to achieve and enjoy success and happiness.

I can tell you from my own personal experience that coaching works! Perhaps it could work for you.

An Idea Becomes Reality
by Roland Holzwarth

I am pleased to offer the MontroseHealthDirectory.com for health care practitioners and the people of our local communities whom they serve. Over the years I have heard many people express an interest in creating a directory which assists practitioners in the holistic health community to be in touch with the people they serve and for the public to find easy access to the care providers available in their area.

Since I was young I have had an interest in creating an information center of some kind. I have been fascinated with the development and expansion of the Internet and its ability to bring information to people all over the world. It is exciting for me to use this tool to help connect people in our Western Slope communities.

The field of holistic health care services and health care related products has been expanding rapidly at the same time that the computer has evolved into a tool for networking and dispensing information faster than has ever before been possible. Using the Internet for the directory allows listings to be added at any time as new practitioners move to a community, and for listings to be edited, redesigned and updated quickly.

While I was designing the web site I began to see health and wellness from a more holistic point of view and I began to see the directory as a community health education resource. Listings will include any businesses which serve healthy living such as natural food stores, health related products, organic farms, green building, insurance programs with complementary care coverage, non-profit environmental groups, advocacy and support groups, etc.

I encourage you, whether you are a health care provider or health conscious consumer, to contribute articles, personal anecdotes, art work, poetry, recipes, whatever contributes to the art of healing, to create a forum where not only information but ideas and inspiration can be exchanged.  It is only with your participation that this project can be a success.

A special thanks goes to Ryan Foster who designed the website and spent weeks of intensive work to manifest it. Without him, the Montrose Health Directory would still be only an idea.

In the near future we will do some advertising on KVNF and in some publications in our local area. This can only be done if we have enough subscribers for our Standard Listings. Please become a subscriber to the MontroseHealthDirectory.com.

Peace and blessings to all of you
